Keep or Sell?

by Ben

Yet again, Mr. Ayers has prompted a new article, this time weather to sell his PowerMac G4 after he replaces it with a New MacBook Pro. My instant reaction is “No, keep it as a spare, you won’t get much money from it”. But I want to dig deeper and find out if that is really the best option.

My first step is to look on “Mac2Sell“. This website is dedicated to giving you a price for your used mac, based on what features you have, or don’t have. He is looking at a return of 13% of what he bought the computer for new. It is such a small amount that working to find a buyer, and cleaning the computer up, this would not justify selling the computer..

Another reason to keep the computer, is because of down time due to failure of the new computer. While I would love to believe that computers are all built perfectly, and there will never be issues with them, we all know that computers eventually fail, and when that happens, your stuck without the connection many of us require daily for our jobs.  By keeping the older computer, he guarantees he will have some computer to use if the new computer is out of commission. This is another strong argument to keep the computer.

Lastly, the option of having a word processing computer is always a good option. When you don’t need the power of the new computer, and you don’t want to take that expensive toy out of the house, it is nice to have a cheaper computer to bring with you.

I have yet to find a reason to sell.
